RTP explained: what 96.5% really means

RTP, or Return to Player, is the theoretical percentage of all wagers a slot pays back over a very long sample. A 96.5% RTP means for every 100 units wagered across millions of spins the game returns 96.5 units on average.

That average hides everything interesting. Two 96.5% slots can feel completely different because volatility governs how the RTP is distributed. A high-volatility title spends most of its budget on rare big hits, while a low-volatility one drips small wins constantly.
